Cat-Cow Flow: Loosen Your Upper Back & Release Tension
What Is Cat-Cow?
Cat-Cow is a gentle, flowing yoga movement that takes your spine through flexion (rounding) and extension (arching). This motion helps lubricate the joints of the spine while stretching and activating the muscles along your back, shoulders, and neck.
How to Do It
Start in a tabletop position with your hands directly under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
Inhale (Cow Pose): Drop your belly toward the ground, lift your chest, and gently look forward or slightly up.
Exhale (Cat Pose): Round your spine, tuck your chin to your chest, and draw your belly button in.
Move slowly between these two positions, syncing each movement with your breath.
Repeat for 8–10 controlled reps, focusing on smooth, intentional movement.
Why It Works
This movement targets the entire upper back and trapezius muscles, helping to:
Reduce stiffness from repetitive motion (shooting, driving, desk work)
Improve posture and spinal alignment
Increase mobility in the shoulders and thoracic spine
Promote relaxation through controlled breathing
Pro Tips
Don’t rush it—this isn’t about speed, it’s about control.
Think about moving one vertebra at a time for a deeper stretch.
Keep your shoulders away from your ears to avoid adding tension.
Pair this with a short mobility routine before or after a hunt or range session.
Where to Add It In
Pre-hunt warm-up: Loosen up before long walks or carrying gear
Post-range recovery: Release tension from shooting posture
Daily reset: Great in the morning or after long hours sitting
Bottom line:
Cat-Cow is a quick, effective reset for your spine and upper back. Just a minute or two of intentional movement can make a big difference in how your body feels—both in the field and in everyday life.
