Akkar Back Country Magnum

with Ashley Holm

There are some guns you like shooting, and then there are the ones that just become your gun. For me, when turkey season rolls around, that’s the Akkar USA Back Country Magnum. It’s sturdy, it feels good in my hands, and it’s built for exactly where I want to take it - the turkey woods.

It’s All in the Details

My favorite thing about the Back Country Magnum might actually be the little details.

The green Cerakote finish immediately gives it that rugged, made-for-the-woods look. Pair that with the Mossy Oak Obsession stock and it looks like a turkey gun should look.

Then there’s the beard ruler right on the barrel.

Is that the reason you buy a shotgun? Probably not. Is it one of those little touches that makes a turkey hunter smile? Absolutely.

It feels like Akkar actually thought about the person who would be carrying this gun into the woods rather than simply taking an existing over/under and calling it a turkey gun.

24 Inches Just Makes Sense

The Back Country Magnum is a 12-gauge over/under with 24-inch barrels, and that shorter setup is one of my favorite things about it.

When you're sitting against a tree, tucked into a blind or working through thick spring woods, I don't want a shotgun that feels like I'm fighting it every time I reposition.

This one feels compact without feeling small.

It’s chambered to handle 2¾-inch through 3½-inch shells and comes with five extended choke tubes, ranging from Improved Cylinder through Extra Full. There’s also a rail if you prefer running an optic on your turkey setup.

But specs only tell you so much.

The Shot Proves It.

A turkey gun can look great. It can have all the right features. It can feel perfect when you shoulder it. But eventually, it has to perform.

And that's where the Back Country Magnum has earned its spot for me.

I want a turkey gun that I feel confident carrying into the woods before daylight. One that feels solid when that gobbler finally closes the distance and the entire morning comes down to one opportunity.

The Back Country Magnum gives me that confidence because I like the weight. I like the balance. I like the shorter barrels. And I really like having the option of that second barrel sitting there ready to go.

Most importantly, I like the way it shoots.

My Turkey Gun. No Question.

Akkar has been building shotguns since 1985, and today the company produces everything from hunting and sporting guns to competition and specialty platforms. But the Back Country Magnum feels like a shotgun that knows exactly what its job is. It isn't overly fancy. It isn't trying to be something it isn't. It's rugged, thoughtfully designed and ready to get dirty. And come turkey season, that's exactly what I want.

If you're getting your setup ready for turkey season, the Akkar USA Back Country Magnum is one worth putting your hands on. Check out Akkar USA to learn more about the Back Country Magnum and their lineup of hunting shotguns.
